The Nightshade Family and Inflammation

UPDATE: Mike and I tried eliminating the nightshade family from our diet for 2 weeks, and we didn't see any major difference in Mike's RA symptoms. While I do believe that this may certainly help some people, we did find that it does not effect Mike's symptoms.

In our never-ending quest to completely cure (with the Lord's help) Mike's RA, we are constantly searching for new tips and ideas to help ease inflammation, reduce joint pain, and see noticeable improvement in mobility.

I was reading through some natural remedy tips for Rheumatoid Arthritis today, and stumbled across something that, for Mike at least, may really help!

Have you ever even heard the term "Nightshade Family"? I hadn't until earlier today! The Nightshade Family is selection of fruits and veggies that contain compound groups of alkaloids. The main culprits are:
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes
  • Pepper (sweet and hot) and
  • Eggplant
It is thought that the alkaloids can cause inflammation in joints, among other health concerns.

Some RA patients have shown great improvement by doing a "nightshade cleanse" where you eliminate all members of the nightshade family from your diet for 2 weeks, then slowly add one back in at a time to see which ones, if any, effect you.

So, tonight, we are starting our Nightshade Cleanse! I will be sure to update this blog with any improvements as we go!

Wish us luck!

  1. How is this going for you? I have poor digestion, causing all sorts of skin problems. And my joints are unhappy: can't cycle anymore. It's about 3 weeks after this post...Did avoiding nightshades make a difference?

  2. Hi Christina,

I'm so sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing! I would definitely recommend doing a two week elimination of the nightshade family to see if that will help. My husband didn't see much of a difference, however, I do know it's helped many people! If you try it, please let keep me posted on if it helped!

    God Bless,
    Angela
